Hey,

We are doing Equations with Rational Expressions.

Directions: Solve each equation, check your solutions.

The problem: 2/m = m/5m+12

The answer: -2, 12

My question:  How? (Show work, please)

Thanks!

You solve for "m" using PEMDAS in reverse order.

Basically, try to get "m" by itself on one side of the equal sign.
Once you have those answers, plug them back into the original equation to make sure they work. Cos sometimes you can get answers from the problem that don't work, so always go back and plug them in to double check.

What the heck's PEMDAS?  And I think you missed some brackets...

2/m = m/(5m + 12)

multiply through by m, then by (5m+12)

2/m * m * (5m + 12) = m/(5m + 12) * m * (5m + 12)
2(5m + 12) = m^2
m^2 - 10m - 24 = 0
(m + 2)(m - 12) = 0
so m = -2 or m = 12

PEMDAS is a mnemonic acronym for the order of operations- standing for- parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction.
